Workarounds for known problems
Please read the dn3dhelp.exe file that came with your game first. This
contains solutions to common problems, and you may already have your answer
in your hands. Also, make sure you are using v1.3d of the game. If you have
v1.0 or v1.1, upgrading to v1.3d alone might solve your problem.

Help! I can't get my MicroSoft Sidewinder Pro to work right!
Flip the switch on the bottom of the thing to "One", and make sure you pick
Thrustmaster in the Duke setup program.

Playing some of the higher levels causes the game to slow down, eventually
to a stop!
This is a problem with the game engine in v1.3d. What's happening is that
the game is spawning an almost infinite number of game enemies in memory
(you can't actually see them), and because of this, it's slowing the game
to a crawl. We're looking into this for v1.4.
No, there's no date on v1.4 yet.

I bought a registered copy of Duke in Australia, and I can't turn off the
Parental Lock!
The "regular" version of Duke3D cannot be distributed in Australia. There
is a special version for sale there. Here is some text from Dennis Scarff,
our Vice President of World Operations I received when I asked him for a
statement regarding Australia and Duke 3D.
Upon the completion of Duke Nukem 3D it was promptly sent to Manaccom, our
master dealer in Australia. Manaccom submitted the game to the Government
Censors for a rating and waited. Around the same time someone in Tasmania
decided to shoot up the place and if I remember correctly around thirty
people lost their lives. This sparked a reaction from the public as well as
the Government and the decision was made to ban all violent games. The
message to our staff was clear, unless we produced a non violent version of
the game, it would simply not be allowed into the country. Manacomms
request for a non violent version of the game was evaluated, and it was
determined that the effort of re-designing portions of the program then
testing the completed product would take a long time.
To this, a version was produced for Australian distribution that has the
Parental Lock Permanently on. It is not legal for us to sell or offer the
"regular" version in Australia. I'm sorry.

Cache Size of zero error
If you go to start the game, and get an error that says CACHE SIZE IS ZERO,
it usually means that your game data is corrupt. Run Scandisk, or some
other disk repair program, and then delete the game totally. Reinstall. If
that doesn't work, check the size of the DUKE3D.GRP file, it should be
26,524,524.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modem not responding
First check your port speed. It it's not at 9600, put there, and leave it
there. Second, check to make sure you have the right com port selected in
the Duke3D setup program.
Then, if that's correct, make sure you enter the correct port address/IRQ
info in the com port setup section. DO NOT USE DEFAULT. Some system Bios
(NexGen, Cyrix) report incorrect info to Commit, which is looking in your
BIOS for your port settings. This can be overriden by putting the correct
port info in by yourself.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Invalid Packet Size error in modem/serial play
First check your port speed. Leave it at 9600. If that doesn't work, try
launching the level you wish to play directly from the command line. An
example would be:
SETUP /v2 /l03 /s2 /name whatever
This will let you change whatever you want in the setup program, and then
go directly to Episode 2, Level 3, Skill 2. Change this for whichever
level/skill you wish to play. This applies to both shareware and registered
v1.3d. Replace the word whatever with the name you wish to be (it all must
be one word).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
My directories are gone after playing Duke3D!
Check your DOS environment. Type "SET" at the command line, and if it looks
abnormal, reboot. In specific, you're looking for the DOS environment
variable DIRCMD. Try entering "SET DIRCMD=", and all should be OK.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Build has weird video when I switch to 3D Editing Mode
Move your build files to the Duke Nukem 3D game directory. This goes for
the Editart program as well.
Please note that Build and Editart are not supported.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mouse Control Too Fast after Patching to v1.3d
This is an easy one. Delete your config file, and then reconfigure. You'll
be ok.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modem play not working right in v1.3d
Make sure your port speed is at 9600 on both sides. Also try making the
modem init string AT &F.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
NexGen/586 CPU's
If you have a NexGen, you should first try going into your CMOS settings,
and looking for a setting called Alternate Instructions. Make sure this is
on. If this still doesn't work, visit their WWW site at
http://www.nexgen.com and download the Q87 Floating Point Emulator. This
should get you going.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATI Mach64 Video Cards & SVGA
If you have a Mach64 and v1.1 still does not work in SVGA modes, look in
your c:\mach64 directory for a file called m64vbe.com. Use this before
running Duke, and you should be OK. If you do not have this file, contact
ATI for an upgrade. Mach64 owners should not use UNIVBE/Display Doctor,
they should use this m64vbe.com file.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matrox Millenium at 800x600
We've noted a problem with Matrox at 800x600 and lockups. At this time, we
have no workaround for this, even using UniVBE and the most up to date
Matrox BIOS. The only thing we can say is to not play at 800x600.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Video Cards & SVGA
If you get lockups, blank screens, or other weirdness when trying to use
SVGA modes, you need to use a VESA VBE compliant software driver. We
recommend Display Doctor (formerly UNIVBE) v5.2, which can be obtained at
this World Wide Web site: http://www.scitechsoft.com.
